Camellia Flower Colors and Winter Blooms

January at Pauline Manor may be chilly, but it also brings one of my favorite sights on the property: the camellias.

We have seven enormous camellia bushes scattered throughout the yard, and every winter they absolutely burst into bloom. These aren’t just little shrubs either. They’re full, well-established giants that were clearly planted decades ago with care. I’m convinced they were a gift to this house, and to everyone who’s lived here since.

One of the early owners of Pauline Manor owned a local florist shop, and I have no doubt these camellias were part of their original vision. It makes me so happy that they chose these specific plants and that they’re still blooming strong, bringing color and beauty to the yard after all this time. In the middle of a gray, cold Florida winter, they feel like a gift.

Camellias are known for their wide range of bloom colors, and our yard gives a pretty incredible sampling of them. If you’ve ever searched for camellia flower colors, you know they come in everything from soft blush tones to bold reds, pure whites, and even striking swirls. Walking the property in January feels like wandering through a living gallery.

Each of our camellia bushes has its own look and personality, and I wanted to share a few of my favorites with you.

Our Camellia Flower Colors

Pure White Blooms

One of the largest bushes produces stunning white camellias that are so full and layered they almost look like roses. These feel timeless and elegant, and they really pop against the dark green leaves and bare winter branches.

Soft Pink with Yellow Centers

Another favorite is the pale pink variety with soft yellow centers. These are delicate and romantic, and they’re usually the ones I clip and bring inside to brighten up the kitchen windowsill.

Bright Magenta-Red

Tucked near the back of the house is a camellia bush that holds nothing back. The flowers are deep magenta with just a touch of red, and they bloom slightly later than the rest. They always feel like the grand finale of camellia season.

Pink and White Swirls

This variety stops people in their tracks. The petals are a mix of soft white and bright pink, like peppermint candy. Every bloom looks a little different, and I love how unpredictable and unique they are.

Deep Rose Pink

Near the front steps is a camellia bush with medium rose-pink flowers. They’re soft but vivid, and they add the perfect splash of color by the walkway. These are the ones visitors usually notice first.

Each of these camellia flower colors brings something special to the garden. They bloom steadily through the winter, offering a dose of color when we need it most. I’ve included some photos of this year’s blooms, and I’ll keep adding more as the bushes grow and change.

It’s easy to overlook the quieter months in the garden, but the camellias make January feel alive. I’m so grateful they’re here, and even more grateful that someone, long before us, had the vision to plant them.
